There are few options for nondrivers in Houston. The Metro buses are predominantly for commuters; taxis (the most reliable firm is Yellow Cabs; tel 713/236-1111) at $4 for the first mile and $1.65 for each additional mile, are expensive; and the humid climate and huge distances make walking unappealing. However, in the face of crippling traffic congestion, efforts are being made to encourage public transportation; a light rail system is in the works linking downtown to key tourist destinations.
